Overview of Week

A reminder that today we will have Andy Rendon as guest speaker for our class. On Wednesday, we will have Part II of Phil Baird's presentation (meeting in Room 111). You will be given participation points for being in attendance at both of these presentations, much like we do for all "in class activities".

On Friday, Dec. 5th, we'll work on our Taskstream portfolios. BE SURE TO BRING YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD for your portfolio so you can log in.

Stay warm!

Thanksgiving Holiday Week

This past week, we were fortunate to listen to two guest speakers: Phil Baird on the topics of blood quantum and tribal enrollment; and the gentleman from Iraq. These were both wonderful opportunities to hear information that can only come from what is referred to as the "primary source", the person who is actually involved first-hand in what they are speaking to you about in their presentations.

In Monday during class, on Nov. 24, we are going to do two things:
  • Upload a document to our Taskstream portfolios
  • Preview and sign up for the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) newsletter at http://nmai.si.edu/
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, we will not meet on Wednesday, Nov. 26th. Safe travels to those of you going on the road. For those of you staying home, enjoy the time with family and friends.

A look ahead:

On Monday, Dec. 1, Andy Rendon, the UTTC Academic Dean, is going to visit our classroom for an interview session. Prior to coming to UTTC this fall, Mr. Rendon has been a K-12 school administrator for most all of his adult life. He is going to share some of his experiences working with families from diverse backgrounds and with families who choose not to have their children participate in certain school activities.

On Wednesday, Dec. 3, Phil Baird will share his "Part II" of some of the topics he shared with you this past week. We will again meet in Room 111, next to the library, and invite the other classes to join us.

As always, let me know if you have questions!

Happy Monday Morning!

We'll begin class today with a current event discussion lead by John. Then we're going to finish our discussion of Chapter 5 and the learner outcomes at the beginning of the chapter. After this, we're going to discuss degree of blood/blood quantum and prepare for the guest presentation by Phil Baird on Wednesday.

You were supposed to email me your responses to the topics on page 125 of your text before class today.

See you Wednesday, at 10 AM, in Room 111 for the "Who is Indian?" (P. Baird's title) discussion.

We're going to watch the video "Across the Creek" in class on Friday.

We have talked about culture being defined as our family structure, religion/spirituality,values/beliefs, and so on. This video talks about the need for all people to know about these things, to know "where they come from", in order to move into the future.

Broken by the legacy of colonialism, the Lakota Tribes struggle for restoration, healing and rebuilding. This film is a conversation between the elder and younger generations about reclaiming their stories and culture. By looking at the family structure, spirituality, language and values, they hope to build a vision for the future.
