For
this assignment, you will work to develop a presentation about an ethnic group.
The goals for this assignment are for you to use rhetorical skills to
communicate with audiences in appropriate ways, to use research to find and
present information, to explore the construction of identity in different
contexts, and to articulate your learning through written text in a presentation
format (i.e. PowerPoint, etc.).
PRESENTATION FOR YOUR PEERS – Due FRIDAY,
DECEMBER 6TH at 10 AM
You
will create a 10-minute presentation about the ethnic group you have chosen.
Your primary job is to give us information that will help us better understand
the cultural and historical context for a given ethnic identification. You will
have to decide what’s important and what’s not, and how best to present the
information. This part of the presentation should include:
- Information:
You get to decide what to focus on, but here are some possibilities to get
you thinking: language, geographical location, family structure, gender
roles, food traditions, particularly interesting customs, religion, key
historical events, music, artwork, pop culture, etc.
- Visual
aid: Power Point presentation (video clips, photographs, posters, etc. are
all welcome, to help us understand the cultural context you are exploring).
FINAL PROJECT – DUE on or before
MONDAY, DECEMBER 16TH at 5 PM
You
will turn in a 3 page (not including cover page and references), double-spaced,
typed, 12 font, paper that includes:
- Written
reflection: Compose a reflection of what you learned by completing the
research for your presentation. Some guiding questions:
- Is
there difference between how we understand people who are different from
us before and after we get to know more about them?
- Are
there differences between how we understand people who are different from
us when we’re young and how we understand differences as adults?
- Why
do we need to learn about other groups of people?
- How
do we respond to or interact with people we work with who have different values
or beliefs than we do?
- Resources:
Your paper must include a list of resources for where you got your
information. Use Citation Machine (www.citationmachine.net) to put your
sources into APA format.
- You
will be graded on your writing mechanics. Ask somebody to proof read your
paper and provide you with suggestions for edits if you are unsure.
- I
will also need an electronic copy of your PowerPoint presentation (minimum
of 9 slides – 7 slides of content, one title page and one references page
= 9 slides).
